Frequently Asked Questions

What is ICE?

ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security. Created in 2003, ICE is responsible for immigration enforcement, including arrests, detentions, and deportations. The agency operates detention centers across the U.S. and conducts raids in communities and workplaces.

Why should ICE be defunded?

ICE operates with minimal oversight and has been responsible for hundreds of deaths in detention, family separations, and human rights abuses. The agency's $9+ billion annual budget could be better spent on community services, healthcare, and creating humane immigration pathways. Many advocates argue that ICE should be abolished entirely and replaced with a more just system.

How can contacting my representatives help?

Representatives respond to constituent pressure. When enough people contact their elected officials about ICE funding, it can influence votes on appropriations bills. Your voice matters, especially when combined with others in your district. Regular contact shows sustained opposition to ICE's practices.

Is it legal to contact my representatives?

Absolutely! Contacting your representatives is a fundamental right protected by the First Amendment. It's a core part of democratic participation. Representatives have staff dedicated to reading and responding to constituent communications.

Will I get in trouble for using this site?

No. This site simply helps you exercise your constitutional right to petition your government. All actions (emailing, calling) are legal forms of political advocacy. We don't collect personal information beyond what's necessary to find your representatives.

What is the iOS Shortcut?

The iOS Shortcut is an automation tool that lets you email our daily memo to all your representatives with one tap on your iPhone. It uses Apple's Shortcuts app to fetch the email script and send it automatically. It's a time-saver for busy activists who want to take action regularly.

How do you track voting records?

We track congressional votes on bills related to ICE and DHS funding using publicly available data from Congress.gov and other official sources. The voting records shown are for specific appropriations bills that fund ICE operations.

Is this site affiliated with any organization?

No. ICEOUT is an independent grassroots project built by activists. We're not affiliated with Socialist Alternative, ICE In My Area, or any other organization, though we support their work. This is a volunteer effort to make advocacy more accessible.

How can I help beyond contacting representatives?

Support local immigrant rights organizations, attend protests and community meetings, donate to bail funds and legal defense funds, volunteer with groups providing services to immigrants, and educate others about ICE's practices. Check our Resources page for organizations doing this work.

What if my representative doesn't respond?

Keep contacting them. Persistence matters. Also consider: attending town halls, organizing with neighbors to submit group letters, contacting local media about your representative's silence, and supporting primary challengers who oppose ICE funding.
